IQ is measured by testing. The tests were standardized by giving them to large numbers of people of different ages. The testers worked out the idea of a "mental age" which was based of the average performance of a large number of children of a given age on the test. To calculate an IQ the mental age (based on the test score) is divided by the actual age and the result is multiplied by 100. So if a child's mental age is equal to his/her actual age then the IQ would be 100. Smarter children tend to score a mental age higher then their actual age so their IQ's are greater than 100 and so on. When a person approaches adulthood the technique becomes less valid.

IQ testing has been used to guide students into different courses of study but questions were raised as to whether or not the tests had a cultural or racial bias.
