My suggestion:
(a) loosely tie the plug end around the base of the trunk (don't pull it tight!) and run the lightless part of the cord up the trunk so that the first light is at the base of the first branch;
(b) work from there, daisy-chaining the strings as you go.
This way, you'll be able to plug the cord in when you're done, without it hanging off of a branch somewhere -- and getting tripped on, bringing the whole tree over.

I start from the top to the bottom. I move the tree out so I can walk around it easily and about every foot or so I wrap the lights around a branch. If you have good electrical in the house you may want to go all out and wrap it around every six inches from the back to the front. You will need about 2000 lights for a 61/2 foot tree to do it that way. Usually I just wrap it once every foot.

Start from the top and work your way down and around
mind how long your light string is you'll need to space it
our lights we use have little clips for branches. You'll have
to be your own judge about how they lay. Remember lights go on first and come off last. Hope I helped you.

Start from the top of the tree and place the lights near the tip of the branches so that it will look nice, full and beautiful.

Well, best 1st step would be to lay them on the floor and plug in and make sure they light as I did not do that and after an hour of hanging them on the tree.......NO LIGHTS WORKING! My mother actually had a great idea of stringing them up and down the tree in sections. Said it would be easier that way to take down or replace in case there was a bulb out. Hmmm, why didn't I think of that first.

I go from bottom to top, with the last one up the fairy's skirt. It's an old tradition in our family. Our lights have little crocodile clips on them to hold them in place.
