I am 67 years old and can agree with you, it can be if you let it.The fact that our society thinks that only because I turned 65, I must put my brain or abilities on a shelf is repugnant to me.So, I returned to work, not because of the money for I receive a good number of pensions, but I wanted the social interaction, the exercise and the continued daily need of satisfaction of what had or is to be accomplished that day.

It depends on how well you planned for retirement. To many people wait until they are ready to retire, before they even think about it. Then is too late! A wise person will start setting aside when they complete their education. Along with saving for your children's education, or whatever you need to consider. Plan and prepay your funeral too! It may sound bizarre, but it will happen. Accept fact. So many young people can only see till the weekend. and party time. So yes, retirement can be like purgatory, or the best time of your life!

Retirement is like anything else in life, you only get out of it what you put in. If you just sit around all day feeling sorry for yourself then yes it's purgatory, but a self made purgatory!. Just because you are retired doesn't mean you are useless, there are a lot of Worthy causes out there just crying out for help, with years come wisdom, try offering it to those who need it.Take up a hobby, just keep busy./

It is and it isn't. It's what you make it. I know. I'm 44 and retired for medical reasons. I'm still active but I don't really have a day to day plan. I get up in the morning and think of things to do or places to go. At first I didn't have a clue how to fill up my time between obligations. Then I realized that NOW I can do the things I want to do instead of having to plan around a workweek. I can read more books, watch more TV, sleep late, stay up late, help my friend work on his car or build a garage, oil my bicycle, trim my palm tree, etc. The world is my oyster. Finally. Have fun!

It is hard to adjust to the home life after years of working. If you are still in fairly good health try getting just a part time job even for just a couple of days a week. Take a class in something that is of interest to you. Take up a new hobby. Volunteer at a hospital or a theatre in your area. Go for walks, join a gym. Join a church or whatever faith you may be.Get involved with other people. Good luck.

If you have been a workaholic all your life and had no hobbies, sports interest, no friends. Then work is all you know and it will be miserable. Just more time to read the obituaries column in the newspaper and talk about aches and pains.
I fish, camp, computer, ski, hike and have a great dog and significant other at age 64. Ah, life and retirement is good.

Depends on what you do with your time, and what's important to you.
If you're the kind of person who lived to work, then yeah, it would be unpleasant and boring.
However, if you're the kind of person who worked to live, and who had an active lifestyle outside of work, then it's the best thing ever -- you finally have the time to dedicate to things you enjoy, like a really long summer break.

It can be but there are those slim few who retire and are in good health and have a good amount of money who have a pretty good life after retirement.

It was for my dad when he retired. He simply did not know what to do with himself. Later, he said that he thought if he'd gotten a part-time job it might have helped him stay healthier. Good luck!
