I used http://www.zonealarm.com (ZoneAlarm), for nine plus years. Their free for home personal use. This sofware has never allowed a rogue port to enter my system and never allowed any personal data to leavel my system. You get daily updates if necessary an all new version you are advised automatic to download the free new version. You don't even have to remove the old version. The new version will remove and install the new version for you.

An excellent free firewall is Comodo Personal Firewall. It can pass firewall "leak tests" that even a lot of the "paid-for" firewalls cannot pass.

And Comodo has a great support forum. Where the CEO / President of the company might even himself answer your question! Check it out at:

Not Macafee they aren't the best at anything non cooperate.

How much do you want to spend?

For a nice all around free package go for Awil's Avast Home edition it includes a good basic firewall, and their pro version is even better.

For money Zone Alarm is great, however it is not the most user friendly ect and you cannot have any traces of previous anti virus.
It really messed up my dads computer untill he uninstalled it but I have used it very successfully protecting the computers I work on as IT. Zone Alarm does NOT like Norton with a Vengeance or it might be the other way around. other than that Its great.

Norton Is cost effective but is slower at scanning and takes up more of your pc's memory.

But right now I'm using Avast home edition. It has caught viruses trying to be downloaded by various spyware and tells you then you just say yes let it finish right into this chest or kill the connection and delete the fragments.

Avast is light on resources and fast on scanning. and runs great on any system and Operating system. 98, XP, XP-64, Vista, and even Linux.

It depends if you are after a software firewall or hardware firewall.

A software firewall is a program that you install on your PC and you can set it to protect your PC. I recommend the Trend Micro firewall (http://www.trendmicro.com/en/products/desktop/pc-cillin/evaluate/overview.htm)

A hardware firewall is a piece of physical 'machinery' that monitors traffic coming from your modem/router and checks it before passing it on to your PC (and vice versa!). In my opinion this is the best solution - but costs more. It is much more manageable and you can control things much better. The firewall I use is a SonicWall TZ170 (http://www.sonicwall.com/products/index.html)

PS.
Stand alone (as oppose to whole combo thing) Zone Alarm is probably OK as well.
PS. MINDOCTOR try testing it with these – you might be surprised:

ONLY Kerio was able to pass all tests (from all tested major brands Firewalls) and only after adding to it two custom rules (info from old GRC forum post).
