Understanding english, if it is thursday and you are planing a trip for next friday are you talking about tomorrow or the friday after next? If your answer is the friday after next then define "next" in the friday after next. This is tomorrow. Which is next friday! Is this true?

Technically if it is Thursday, "next Friday" would be tomorrow. Although people usually say this when it is at least a few days away and not the day before, when they can simply say "tomorrow" instead, it is still the next one.

If they mean the Friday following that one, then they should specify by saying "Friday after next," as you did in your question. "Next" is defined as the nearest, or the one that comes immediately after the present one. The Friday that comes after the present one (tomorrow) is a week and a day away.

To clarify, say today is Thursday, and the 1st of the month. Next Friday is the nearest one, so tomorrow, Friday the 2nd, is next Friday. Friday after next is the Friday that follows the present one. This means that Friday the 9th, a week from tomorrow, is Friday after next.

Hope this helps! :)

This Friday refers to the current calendar week. Next Friday refers to the week following this one. Friday after next means Friday of the third week. This is very confusing to many people - see the first answer for confirmation of this.

So, if today were Thursday, November 30th:
this Friday = December 1st
next Friday = December 8th
Friday after next = December 15th

Today is Sunday, December 3rd:
this Friday = December 8th
next Friday = December 15th
Friday after next = December 22nd

Since you may be dealing with people who misunderstand it the way the first person did, it it probably best to specify dates when using this method - say "next Friday, the 15th".

I usually say 'this Friday' if I mean the one just coming. 'Next Friday' is the one after that. But if today is Thursday I would say 'tomorrow' or 'next Friday' for the following one.

most people would say "this friday" if it's in the same week and "next friday" if its in the following week. I usually just say "on friday" if its in the same week though.
