i know it's true but they're young and no very little about science...I "forget" to tell them most bacteria is harmless or even helpful...

It's only cruel if they have a phobia about germs, and you do it to torment them.
'Cause... well... technically, you're probably telling the truth. Most stuff is covered in all sorts of organisms. Heck, so is the air we breathe. :-\
