First appeared in English around the 1600's. Originally from the Latin 'juxta' and the French 'position'. In that sense it didn't mean 'contrast' but simply 'next to' or 'adjacent to'. Hence the definition is 'next to' (the noun) or 'placed next to' (the verb). Strictly speaking, that's still the definition. Items that are juxtaposed of course then lend themselves to being compared or contrasted by the observer, but that sense should come from the context of the sentence it is used in.
