When i first started my period i was having the same problem. It is sad to say but it is nothing you can stop by yourself. Since it is your very first period, you should wait to you are off and come back on, before you go see a doctor. Make sure you take notes of when you started, ended, how long you stayed on, what type of flow was it (heavy, light or medium) and lastly i know this is kind of gross but keep up with however many pads you use a day, because they will ask all these questions. Once they have decided if the problem is more than just a one-time thing, they will ask you your feelings on birth control. They will tell you the different versions you can use, and don't worry about gaining wait from taking them because unless you are using them to prevent pregnancy too theirs not enough hormonal balances in the medicine. Also FYI, if you are getting birth control to control your period, do not assume you will have sex because it is not enough dosage to prevent getting pregnant unless you ask for it. Also if you are thinking you really don't want to always take pills to prevent this problem, but that is the best method for you, don't worry i only took them for about 3-4 months and i was regulated. PLEASE, do not continually ignore it because if you are bleeding too heavily for too long like i was you may become anemic.

go to the doctor! I have irregular periods. I would go through a year without one, have them for a month straight... like yours very light then heavy after 7 days. I thought that I could never have children because it effects it. It could just be a back up or it could be a cyst. please go to the doctor, just to be on the safe side. a friend of mine was diagnosed with HPV and its the worst version of it (there are different levels), thank god its in the early stages and they are going to try and get it out. Im not trying to be mean or anything, i just want you to be aware that there could be something wrong and the earlier that you get it checked, the better.

Ahhhh i remember my first flow of a period, it was great yeah but now i hate it. So b/c it hasnt ended yet, your period depends on your body and plus all females are different. Just every other women's period varies from woman to woman on how long it lasts. I mean mine used to be as long as yours hunny, but now i am only on my perid for about 4-5 days. & your period when you start is usually heavy. B/c its new and its your first and plus it is old blood, and also from your egg and yeah i wont go into that stuff. Ask that Q later on when you wanna know more about it.

Go see your doctor if it lasts for more than a few more days. Your cycle may have shortened. There are some rare people out there who do have periods every week.
Edit: Sorry, failed to see that it was your first. The first one is always a bit wonky. It'll take a few years for your cycle to regularize. Don't worry too much.

I had really irregular periods too when I first got my period. Check in with your doctor to make sure everything is fine (most likely it is, but its always good to let them know what's going on) and I'd recommend going on birth control pills. They help regulate your period and also help if you're suffering from intense cramps and other period symptoms. Plus, they helped clear up my complexion!

You should probably ask your doctor about it . If you're going for like more than a week that's really not good. If you skip/miss your period for some odd reason, which is common for most girls, than you need to also talk to your doctor because something might not be normal.
Good Luck =)
