I was five months along before I found out I was pregnant. Of course, I was told by two "specialist" that I could not get pregnant. So, it was pretty shocking to go from not being able to have any to being half way there! I think that when pregnancy is the furthest thing from your mind, it is easy to not recognize any of the symptoms. I just thought I had a lot of gas, and was putting on weight because I was on a medical leave due to hand surgery. I think it also has to do if there are any medical conditions that these women may think are causing some of their "symptoms. I personally thought that when I felt a lump in my belly it was another ovarian cyst. I didn't go to the doctor for it because I figured it would just rupture and reabsorb just like the others, so why pay a doctor bill for them to do nothing. Plus if they are heavy to begin with, it is not so easy to see. I wasn't overweight at all. In fact, I didn't even look the slightest bit pregnant.(trust me, if I looked prego, my mother would have spotted it a mile away! She even saw me naked the day I came home from the hospital after my surgery!) The morning I woke up after finding out I was pregnant it was like BOOM! There was this pregnant belly. It was as if she said "Well, they know I'm here so no sense in hiding!"
But I would like to think that come 6mos. along I would have figured it out! (I was exactly 21.5 weeks along when I had my first ultrasound. That was the day after I took my test.)

I knew a woman from where I worked who didn't know she was pregnant until she went into labor. I never would have thought it possible until I saw this woman go through this. She never looked really pregnant, though she was rather large to begin with. All of us at the office were shocked. Unfortunately, because the mother drank, her child was born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. It was a very sad circumstance.
I often wonder if she was in denial. I didn't think it then because I had never been pregnant when this circumstance happened, but now that I have two children I just can't imagine how you could not feel a child moving inside you. When I was pregnant, I felt little hands and feet pushing inside me -- there's no way to confuse that feeling with gas.

I don't get it either. I am heavy set and I even know when I am pregnant. Nothing that my children do in the womb could be mistaken for gas. I think they are either in denial or they want attention. Depending on the women and the situation depends on what I believe they are looking for.

I do believe "some" in rare cases did not know. My sister was 24 weeks pregnant before she found out at a yearly exam. But she was also on birth control, having regular cycles and not gaining weight, she had no indication that she was pregnant.

i suffer from IBS and the pain with that is and can be as servere as a labour pains! especially when ive eaten something im intolerant to by mistake ( usually when its not listed in the ingredients) i get cramps and twinges all the time from it and it is hard to tell the difference.
my whole abdomen goes in to spasms, it is just like labour pain and can be milder like period pain.
with a condition like this with regular periods and an overweight woman and/or a small baby it is possable.
dont know if that helps your question.

I believe some women are in true denial thinking they can't possibly get pregnant and just ignore some signs. While it is usually overweight women I think it could happen to just about anyone.

I think they are freaking stupid and liars to say the least. When you feel the baby kick do they honestly think they have gas that bad? I mean come on. It's ridiculous and a bunch of bull if you ask me. Your body goes through so much while pregnant even if you have a wonderful pregnancy and if you don't know or have some idea that's what's going on then you shouldn't be having sex or allowed out in public.

Obese women often don't know unless they have regular periods. They mistake the movements for gas, and end up going to the hospital when the pain gets so bad, they need a doctor. Really, though, they are in labor.
It's a rare occurence, as most women have regular-semi-regular cycles, but it does happen.
