No, it is not too many. It all depends on your qualifications. What was your undergraduate gpa? What was your gre results or other graduate application results? If you have good grades in the undergraduate and in the graduate exam, you should be able to apply to one or two and get in. If your grades are marginal, then you might want to apply to multiple schools and work on a good application essay stating why you want to enroll at each one.
For me, I applied to one school for my masters and got in. Then I applied to four schools for my JD and was accepted at two of them.
Best wishes.

no, 5 is not enough. not enough at all. try 10 minimum i'd say. many good students get denied because they dont understand the process and are thinking in undergrad terms. graduate schools dont not have fixed gpa/gre scores like undergrad admissions have strict gpa/sat scores for admission. they will offen pick lower gpa students if they have decent gre scores, came from a decent undergrad program, or have strong writing/analytical skills. grad programs also have strict quotas for the number of students they have. when they say they have room for 15, they really mean it. it's not like undergrad where they have 28,000 students and a few hundred more won't matter much. i hope you get in to all of your schools, but i have seen this turn into a disaster before. i strongly encourage you to apply to as many as you can afford. also, many schools, even master's programs, only allow students to enroll in the fall. make a mistake and you cant start school again for a year. good luck!

I think that is a reasonable number. Good luck.
