if you are overweight, up in the years, and/or can only stand for short periods of time without looking for the nearest chair or sofa, how can you call yourself and athlete? according to wikipedia athletes are people who have ABOVE average levels in strengh, agility, and endurance...how do golfers qualify, when most of the time they use golf carts (if they can't walk...eye roll) to get from hole to hole, or have someone carry their bags for them (you know you don't need tough guys like golfers to wear themselves out between the holes), and alot of golfers are old, overweight, business men who drink and smoke while they play, and use the latest technology to help them with their distance/direction of their swing. many REAL sports have the aspects of human nature and instincts in them (running, jumping, lifting, wrestling/fighting, swimming) golf has a faint connection with the swing of the "heavy" clubs. someone give a real legit point to prove me wrong. They are not!! Golf can be considered a sport because a sport is defined as something that amuses or passes time. Golf is by no means an athletic game! Its similar to fishing; a Hobby, nothing more. It seems like Tigar Woods; who is young and athletic, put golf on the map, that is gave it some merit. But the truth is Golf is nothing more than a hobby.

Golf is a hobby nothing more, they will tell you it's a hard game it's stressful, then you find out that they started playing at 30 or forty and they play twice a week, do you think you could hit a baseball at 100 miles an hour if you only play twice a week I think not, and the best one was when sports illustrated had there 25 yr anniversary, Arnold Palmer won for best sportsman for the first 25 yrs what a joke in that first 25 yrs bill Russel won two NCAA championships, one gold medal and 11 of 13 NBA championships how lame is that, golf is for ******.and basically that's who play it.

This is a great debate, covering sports from auto racing to bowling, and golf.

Professional golfers do not use the cart. Walking is a part of the game, so fatigue does play a role, albeit small. It's several miles over 18 holes, but yes, someone is carrying their bags.

Hand eye coordination is the key. It takes an uncanny degree of balance, timing, and delivery of force. A silly game, but very difficult. The mental aspect of the game is difficult, with respect to pressure, reading greens, and basic physics.

It's participants are indeed on the fringe of the "athlete" designation. Still, "sportsman" would not seem substantial enough to someone of Tiger Woods' ability.

I do see your point when you consider how jiggly Phil Mickelson is, and what a slob John Daly has become.

You're right, golfers dont use strength, agility, endurance etc etc but they do use aim, precision and calculation that relate to the physical swing of the club and those are the areas where they have "above average" levels. I think the definition in wikipedia is wrong, wikipedia is a fun read but it's not the best source of information. But one thing i have to say about golf, i find it boring. I want my sports physical and brutal and plus golf tournaments dont have hot ladies dancin around!

true. like of course you walk a couple miles over a golf course but it's hardly a hike cuz most of the time you're not climbing a mountain like in hiking... And really i think the fatigue doesn't really affect ur swing too much... And your swing doesn't exactly require strength, more mechanics and practice.
