Just for a discussion...
A co-worker and I were having a conversation one day. He stated once he have children, he does not want to them to talk like southerner people (He's from New York). He stated the he does not like the southern twine and would like for his children to have a northern accent. Me being the southern girl I am , I asked him why did he move down south and if our "southern twine" is so bad, why don't you move back to N.Y. He had all types of reasons but pretty much danced around the question. My question is, why are some people from northern states so quick to relocate to the south and then sit and criticize everything about the south (from the people, to the weather, the stores etc.)? Why be in a place where in this guy's case does not want his future children to have southern roots but yet he does not want to live up north again and even talks about loving the south better? Seems like contradiction to me. What do you think?

Our accents are part of us. It's our past history and makes us who we are today. I enjoy hearing different accents. Just a comment, I'm pretty sure he meant southern twang and not twine. But hey! Southerners are great and Notherners are great-why can't we all just get along? And to think, people are risking their lives to live here!

I don't know why people do that. I was born in the South, raised in the West. My mother is from a founding Mississippi family. My father is from Wyoming. He was stationed in Biloxi, thought she was just adorable. So he married her and moved her out West and wanted us all to forget about the South. My three siblings and I wound up in speech to get rid of our "impediments". My parents didn't tell anyone they were transplanted southern accents! My father did all of the talking with the therapist (which was the only time I recall that he was super interested in what we were doing at school LOL). All four of us sound as if we are from nowhere in particular.

My father is now an authority on the history of Mississippi (has articles published all over the state) and wonders why all four of us got rid of our accents...We all live in the West. I love the West, but I find the South quite charming. I've also lived in the North. It is not the West. ; )
