For heavy metal, you are right. Metallica has been around longer than any other metal band. They are pioneers of metal. Led Zeppelin is one of my all-time favorite bands, but heavy metal they are not. In fact, they started out as a blues band. Listen to their first album. If that ain't blues, ain't nothing blues. They are pioneers in harder rock than was heard in their time, but not metal. Motorhead is a good one, too. But Metallica was IT in the beginning!

The biggest influenced on metal music is absolutely hard rock music, or usually we call 70's rock, the band like deep purple, black sabbath, led zeppelin etc, are the legend that influence the metal music. Many bands that influenced the metal music are from England, they sail to USA, and then they conquer the top artists of rock music that time. After this legend conquer than we know that in england there is a new genre of music that try to spread their wings to the world of rock music. Their music are quite different from their senior but the root is still the same. The are known as New wave of british heavy metal or NWOBHM, even in other countries also have some new bands that really are so new in their music, but in my opinion this NWOBHM is really the biggest music that contribute the metal music later. So for many metal bands in the beginning of 80's like Metallica, megadeth etc, they all are the big fans of NWOBHM, so if i can say that the biggest influence on metal music ever are all the band from NWOBHM. And then after the reign of this NWOBHM, the new metal bands which are more in speed and roughness are born. And Metallica or slayer are the biggest name for this genre of new metal music that time until now.

It has to be a band from the early days of heavy metal or hard rock. Black Sabbath is an obvious contender. Deep Purple again is obvious, especially the guitar work of Richie Blackmore.
A lot of people are saying Metallica. They have had a big influence on a lot of modern metal bands, with the famous (and excellent) "Black Album" and the notable success of S&M they have done a lot for the genre.
However metal was a well established genre well before Metallica had formed as a band in 1981. Iron Maiden had already released a very sucessful first album over a year before this date, and Kiss, Judas Priest and Motörhead were all long established acts. Indeed Metallica have in the past mentioned Motörhead to be a big influence of theirs (Lemmy thanks them for this acknoledgement in his autobiography "White Line Fever").
One interesting fact about Metallica was that in 1989 they were nominated for a Grammy for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrument but lost to the prog rock/folk/blues band Jethro Tull. Not 100% relevant but I think it is interesting non the less. Metallica won a Grammy 3 years later.
So anyway I would reason that Deep Purple and specificaly Richie Blackmore had the greatest influence on heavy metal over all.

I think you would have to go back a bit to, say - Jimi Hendrix, Wishbone Ash, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Derek and the Dominos, the very early Fleetwood Mac and Black Sabbath. These bands influenced the likes of Guns & Roses, Metallica, etc.

I personally think that Metallica are the best metal band ever but I don't think that they've had the biggest influence on metal music simply because they haven't been around as long as some other metal bands.

Metallica still in my opinion rock the most though!!!!

metallica sucks dude. they didn't influence metal what-so-ever. Ozzy and black sabbath are the pioneers of metal. read a book called the history of metal by ian christe. metallica is mentioned and its good to know the history of metal too. i guess i was a little harsh before by saying metallica sucks. its only their newer stuff that needs to be destroyed. and their sober personalities

Believe it or not I would have to start with black Sabbath for the introduction into metal music but for making the large branches of metal that we see today Metallica made that turning point
