No, FFIII is the third game in the series. It's the first time its been released outside of Japan, but it has a few story tweaks that are similiar to the first Final Fantast (light warriors).
Final Fantasy X-2 was a sequel to Final Fantasy X, and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children was a movie sequel to Final Fantasy VII and Dirge of Cerebus was a spin-off.

No, FF3 is not a sequal to another FF game.FF3 is a game by itself, it is just made by the same people as FF7 or FF12. FF3 has its own story, charactors, and plot. It is an awsome game, and I recommend you play it!!
