My dad is convinced, but has anyone else ever heard of this? Or better still, know of any basis behind it?

For my money, I don't think beer offers any real benefit when used as a plant "fertilizer". To me, it seems like a terrible waste of beer. I think you are better off using water and the appropriate fertilizer for each species of plant.

Good luck with your gardening.

My mom used to water her houseplants with 3 parts water and 1 part beer, she swore it made them grow and made them even look better. to be honest they really did look good. I don't know the actual ratio but she didn't like the smell of beer, so that was why she only used 1 part to 3 of water.
My bird passed away and I used to keep water made up for him with bird vitamins in it. I poured it on my plants one day and they just started growing. It seems that plants also thrive on bird vitamins.
I have no idea why these things work but they do.

yes, its true. im doing that with my vandas and orchids, and they really bloom.... more of water and less amount of beer, actually, whenever we have guests, i would keep their left over beers in the ref for future use. spray it on the plants once a week, not daily, though or it would turn yellow.....
