You must be a long way off the main road supply, if it is going to cost £.40.000. Do you really want cable electricity? Where I live you never see anyone from the electricity company, because they don`t supply `hermits`, Electricity cables don`t come within miles of us. Get your self a generator and supply your own electricity, its` dead cheap, you can run it on oil,derv or whatever.

How big is the supply you are getting???
at £40k i'm guessing this is for either a business premises or a heeeeuuuuuggggeee mansion of some sort and most of that will be for their equipment and not the digging.
If you can provide a little more info I will be able to help as i'm an electrical engineer.

£40k seems about right with the information provided, theres a lot of copper in a 150m run, and for that they should arrange all the appropriate wayleaves for work on the road etc as well a doing all the digging and reinstating. With the voltdrop that will occur on such a run i'm guessing they'll be putting in some decent sized cables, and with the price of copper doubling recently all things electric are getting expensive. The £40k will also allow for any additional work which has to be done to their kit futher up the line to provide you with your supply (such as work on the sub-station)
Distribution companies are regulated so they can't go about ripping people off or they'll have ofgem knocking on there door with a hefty fine so you will probably be stuck with having to pay the £40k.
Count your blessings they dont need another sub-station to accomodate your supply, you'd be looking at a 7 figure sum if that happened!
UU look after the network in this area so your stuck with them afraid, but even if you could go to someone else for a quote it would cost the same.
Sorry to be a harbinger of doom with this one

Do all the digging yourself and then just pay them for the connection.
