Christopher Newport was a famous explorer who discovered the James River. He named it the James River after his sponsor, who was the current King of England - King James. Christopher Newport then colonized the town and called it Jamestown, also to honor the King. An extra fact - Christopher Newport has a city named after him as well...Newport News! :o)
