So the government want to charge us to drive per mile thus creating a revenue of 28 billion, another form of tax..
My question if the goverments aim is to reduce emissions, why don't they subsidise car drivers from the proffit made to covert petrol run cars to gas to enable cars to drive on Gas.
Gas is clean, cheap, and the easy solution to polution, the oil stays clean as the day it was put in,

Is it the government wants to reduce global warming, or is it they simply want to screw us even more ?

Mike S thank you for your comment, but as for smoking I had the same argument with my sister, she said the same as you... my comment was you pay tax to smoke not to kill others in the form of passive smoking, my rant over...

Well I hate to say it, but yes, it is just another case of 'smoke and mirrors' It just amazes me that the Government (whichever party happens to be in power) thinks that we, the public don't 'get this'. The only way to genuinely solve part of the problem would be for them to invest in a proper integrated transport system. And I have to admit, I gave up on Britain 2 years ago and now live in Germany. The way things work here is a real eye opener! I did bring my car here with me and after importing it, was actually surprised to find that despite fuel being around 10p cheaper a litre, that taxing a car here is about £110 more a year than the in the UK and despite being able to use my full no claims bonus, insurance is costing me around £90 extra a year! So, roundabouts and swings. But you know what? The great thing is I'm now in a country where I'm not held to ransom by the Government, I can leave my car parked all week ( and not worry about it being nicked!) and jump on a bus, tram or train and get anywhere here quickly and cheaply. And I never thought I'd hear myself say it, but I really am beginning to think that I could live without my precious car! I look at the news from back home and just shake my head in dismay. Don't the politicians get it yet...eventually, anyone who can is just going to give up and leave. Then who will they tax?!

Of course it's yet another tax they say to "Save the Planet" from global warming well did we cause it to happen 20 million years ago no it is something that will happen with us or without us on this planet whether we like it or not and no amount of pick pocketing will ovoid the invertible, not to mention the fact that in 2011 we will be at our closest orbit to the sun. I'd like to know if our pollution is so bad then what are they going to do about the 6 plus active volcano's that spew more harmful gasses in 1 week than man creats in1 year (Rant over) Tony Blair and your cronnies get real if you want money either be honest about how your going to get it or save some by bringing our lads home, (a byproduct of which might be some lives saved) Oh and by the way why should'nt I be aloud to smoke in public you've had your tax for it!!!

Of course it's another tax. This government says it's for environmental reasons...BS .I suspect there is a department somewhere in the corridors of Labour HQ that does nothing else but think up ideas on how to get even more money out of us to pay for their pet schemes, such as the war in Iraq.I live in a country area and there is no alternative for travelling to work as public transport is practically non-existent.Would the government ministers give up their official cars? However, cynic as I am , I would say it's not a proposal, it's a foregone conclusion that it will come in eventually.

This is another tax. Only those who earn low wages and travel to work sometimes quite a few miles will suffer the most. Those people who would work for a low wage sooner than claim benefits will be the target of the rich ministers of government. This government likes to stick it up the poor. The same people who may not be able to work and are forced to finish work because they cannot afford to travel to it will be penalised by not getting benefits because they gave up their jobs. Its a fair old world ain't it. Tony ****, oops Blair and his idiots will not even think about these people or give a hoot anyway. Its time the british people stood up and reject the constant flood of taxes Blair and his war mongers want so they can fund wars for Bush and poke our noses in where they should not be.

Of course it is.It's another way to attack the driver.Trouble is,they keep on putting up taxes, and delivery firms keep on hiking up there prices to keep themselves afloat.
Could you imagine the government paying out to have goods transported by rail, then having to pay more to have them delivered by horse and cart, because that's what it'll come to before long.
The government aught to look at themselves before deriding the general public.
I agree there should be a charge, but why is it always the little man or woman who has to suffer when the big cats just sit back and laugh.

i am opposed to ALL taxes. It is so pitiful to pay bridge tax, turnpike toll and road tax. They tax gasoline for this and part of you income tax goes toward interstates with bridges, etc. The state of Delaware is one of the worst. Charging people for riding on I-95. What a disgrace, if I were a politition from any state with a road tax or toll, i would quit my job. They don't have the guts to do that.
