Miller and Urey tried to duplicate conditions on the primordial earth using a combination of gases in a closed vessel which they subjected to electric discharges to simulate lightning. What they were trying to determine was, given this environment, these chemicals would produce other compounds which at least pointed in the direction of life.

Their results were a little ambiguous, but promising. The conclusion drawn is that, given the conditions on earth in the far distant past, the development of organic (living) matter was a natural process.
