People people people.
This question has been asked 27 times before and I shall answer it briefly once and for all.
The Maya Calendar (maya'n' refers to the language) had months and "tuns" = years. These day/month names repeated every 52 tuns = a calendar round. ( Every 52 years there would be a hesitation, hoping the gods would favorably grant them another 52. 400 of these "tuns" made a "baktun".
December 23, 2012 will merely be the end of the 13th baktun, and the system will return to its beginning.
I quote now from page 82 of "A Forest of Kings" by the late great Dr. Linda Schele, University of Texas at Austin, written in 1990. Search HER name for anything Maya.
'The Maya, however did not conceive this to be the end of this creation, as many have suggested. Pacal, the great king of Palenque, predicted in his inscriptions that the eightieth Calendar Round anniversary of his accession will be celebrated eight days after the first eight-thousand-year cycle in the Maya Calender ends. In our time system, this cycle will end on October 15, 4772.' end quote.
So, if a king has predicted a day in 4772... it will happen. Therefore, PARTY HARDY my little students of maya history. You have quite a few years before worrying.
Our century and millenium ended on Dec 31, 1999. And it continued to 2000.

As I recall, Mayans were very good with numbers. They devised the 365.25 days per year due to the rotation of the earth to the stars. This leads to ask if they knew anything at all about elements in relation to the periodical chart? Since science can prove the further time goes on the more abundant the higher numbered elements on the charts. Science also proved that at a point the star and it's planets ( in our case the Sun) novas or super-novas. And then there are no elements until the dust clears and recollects the starting pair again. Therefore, yes the Mayans have a stopping point on their calendar due to the end, but what that end is, at this point, is only speculation. I would think it has far more to due with the night sky they observed to create their math and calendar system.
