When we bring home the tree, we make sure it gets a fresh cut to the trunk (so it can drink), I fill the base with warm (not hot)water to start the flow, and I use an automatic waterer to make sure that the tree doesn't go dry. Also, I make sure that the heat doesn't blow directly on the tree, and I use lights that stay cool to the touch. Following these guidelines, we always have the tree up for a month and when it comes down it is still beautiful. After the holidays you can donate it to a wildlife preserve or chip it up for mulch.

cut off about an inch from the bottom at an angle and keep it well watered or else you might as well go buy an artificial tree.
