I don't know why we think that. I guess because that's what Americans are raised to believe. Being proud of your nationality is fine, but I think many Americans can be arrogant.

Because we are, essentially, opitmistic people. We can be born in poverty and make ourselves pretty much anything we want to be. We are fiercely independent and a bit too tolerant. ; )
When I lived in Britain people were quite proud of their country as well. (The English were quite English, the Scots verrrry Scots, etc)
