well i got mine at camp when i was 12 and what was worse about it was everyone that had there period was using tampons and i didn't want to do that. so we had to drive an hour from camp with a camp councilor to go to the store at which also they had to buy them because you don't carry money around with you at summer camp. i was really embarrassed and didn't even want to tell anyone but my friend. my friend is the one who finally told someone that is how embarrassed i was it is normal to be embarrassed. also if you could always carry a pad with you from now on then you wont ever have to worry about everyone else. good luck

i got mine at a cross country meet right before the race and i was scared so much that i almost walked the whole thing and came in 4th to last place! i didn't tell my mom. i was to scared she would tell people. she found blood on my sheets (i didn't even notice it until she asked me) i was so scared. i have learned to wear a pantiliner everyday so i dont get panicy all of the time. i also bring an extra pantiliner and a tampon in my backpack so i dont ever have to ask anyone. i also keep a tampon in for a day after i think im done because once i thought it was over but it wasn't and i like spit out a ton of blood and it went through my jeans. i was only 11. dont let it ruin your life. if i could go back i would do everything the same but if i couldn't i would tell my mom by throughing my underwear at her or putting it in the laundry while she was doing it!?!?!?! i am now 12 and this last period actually was normal and i learned to not let it interfear with my life. it made a huge difference. it just takes time and dont let it interfear wiht your life!

I got mine at 12 1/2 years. I knew I was supposed to get it but when I saw it I got a big shock and told my Mom, which she pretty much made me see it was a period. I was not wishing to get a period and so I was not very happy about the whole thing.
It was in the summer and I had time to get used to it before I went back to school.
You should have gone to the school nurse. They are very understanding and have a supply of things to help you out.

I was 11 years old. It was my birthday and we were in a resturaunt. I swiped a nice cloth napkin (clean of course) from the table (my girlfriend's idea) but was still hardly able to enjoy the rest of the evening. 37 years ago and at that age for some reason I got the idea I had done something wrong.
Once home, I confronted my mother who set things right. I really think she thought she had more time before she would have to explain things better.
I'm sure many girls have stories, some funny some not so funny. Hell, honey, just glad it's all over for me.

I got mine when I was 12 years old. Luckily I was at home. My mom eventually found out because well.... I don't know how she found out just a mom's touch! Anyway, if you don't wanna keep on asking friends for pads I suggest either going to the nurse or use paper towels.

My sister came running down from her room when she was 12, one saturday morning, pyjama trousers with a tiny bloodish looking stain at it´s crotch in her hand, yelling at the rest of the family, who was having breakfast at that time: "look mommy, look daddy, i´m so proud, i´ve started menstruating, i can´t believe it!" Later that morning she went with her mom to town, shopping for all the different sorts of tampons and pads (i think her first shopping finds would have lasted years, if she wouldn´t have been so proud, because she had to show all her friends how a tampon expands if stuck in a glass of water ) and in the evening we all went for a "happy first menstruation" feast to her favourite restaurant (she didn´t tell the waiter though). Few weeks later she discovered that having periods is not always fun, but that´s a different story....

I was 13 and luckily I was at home, but I was embarassed to tell my mom for a couple days, but eventually i did and it was good because she taught me how to count the days until it came again. It sucked too, I was in eighth grade and we had a dance coming that weekend and I got my first bout of cramps. What fun!! I don't mean to make it sound so bad, but it's tough when you're a teen. Trust me life seems impossible now but give it about 10 years and you'll look back and realize it wasn't so bad.

I was 12. Luckily I was at home, and had received a sampler pack of feminine products a few months before.
The only way to tell your mom is just to blurt it out. Wait till you're alone with her and say "Mom, I got my period." She'll probably gush for a bit or ask you questions. This is a good time to ask her any questions you may have, and suggest that she take you shopping for feminine products, so you can try out a variety of brands and styles to see what works best for you.
Congratulations, btw!

I got my first period on my 13th birthday. I was at home and it was Summer.
I told my mom I got my period and I was happy then because it finally came. I remember riding my bike around the neighborhood. I already had the stuff because my mom gave it to me. We both knew I would be getting my first period sooner or later.
Sorry to hear yours was embarrassing. I know how you feel. I knew someone who had her first period in the pool while swimming during a class trip (with both girls and boys). I was the only one who didn't tease her about it.

I just got my first period on vacation at the grand canyon. As in just got it like 7 days ago. I told my mom after I got it. First I actually made my own little pad out of toilet paper. Then I told her. Also, they are your friends they understand. Also, I told my mom. But my friend told her mom by email if you are shy.
