I had braxton hicks for ca couple of months before I went into labour and I noticed that the pain was on top and even when I finally had my first contraction it was on top. The difference is the strength of the pain. My first contraction was strong enough to make me sit up in bed and wonder what the heck was going on. After that the pain moved to my back and sides after my water broke in my nicely renovated bedroom. If you are 41 wks you should maybe talk to your doc about inducing you if you are really concerned. The doctors in canada don't usually let the mother go past 41 wks. If he doesn't want to induce you just relax and the baby will come naturally. Congrats

Mother of 4... imagine your stomach as a ball.. my contractions started on the outer rim and worked inwards until my whole stomach was hard .. this would last for about 30 sec and then begin to relax, my hicks contractions were the opposite. I was 41 wks w/ my first ( 20 yrs today). And I thought I would never know when the time was right.. But to this day I remember the first contraction. Trust me you will know. i hope I have been a little help. Good luck.

If you think you are having contractions, phone your maternity department.
I dismissed my contractions because I thought it was just back ache- I had no pain in my stomach where I thought the pain should have been.

A way to tell the difference- are the pains regular, and getting stronger? Do they remain when you change position or take a bath? If so, these are not Braxton Hicks. You need to get your hospital bag into the car and set off for hospital soon in this case.

i just gave birth to my 2nd boy last week.
and i had braxton hicks for ages before actually going into labour!

the difference that i noticed was that braxtons hicks felt more like a strong period pain whereas when i actually went into labour the contractions were alot more painful. i felt them all over my stomach they kind of came on slowly then got really painful then went away and came back again and again only getting stronger.
it really is tough describing what contractions actually feel like.

as you are already 1 week over and feeling these pains i would call the hospital and ask to come in. you could be in early labour!!!

congratulations and good luck

You can have contractions on top on the bottom or in your back.It all depends. And I don't know who told you that labor feels like cramps cuz that's a load of croak. For the most part all labor is different and no one can tell you how it's suppose to feel to your body.I have three kids and each labor felt different. My last baby I wasn't even convinced I was in labor.Since your 41wks.that means your over do.GO TO THE HOSPITAL.Only your doctor will know if it's actually time.

It's also possible that what you feel is not contractions, but you still have contractions that you don't feel. I thought I felt baby movements while I actually had contractions. At 41 weeks you should be closely monitored by the doctor. Some doctors would recommend to induce labor at that point.

Yes I did answer your question......You are most likely having Braxton Hicks, you will not need to ask someone if they are contractions because if you were having real contractions you most likely would not have cared or had energy to write this question.......Contractions hurt like hell and yes they are in the top of your stomach, I didn't' have back labor or any pains in my abdomen mine was all in the top of my stomach.....So if you cannot breath and cannot carry on a conversation when one comes on then yes you are in labor........So next time one comes try to speak or carry on a converstation and then you will know......Good Luck....

According to the site: http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/library/PR/00083.html

Where do you feel the contractions? The pain of true contractions tends to begin high in the abdomen, radiating throughout the abdomen and lower back. With false labor, the contractions are often concentrated in the lower abdomen.

braxton hicks are irratic and with no real pattern, contractions are steady and become closer and closer with each few ones.

Braxtons sometimes feels like a real contraction, but make sure to time them and watch for any progress, water breaking, bleeding, diarreah, any of those symptoms.
