They don't have to recycle.
They don't have to conserve fuel.
They don't have to stop using chemicals that do the job faster.
They don't have to leave the earth cleaner or better than it was when they were there.
They don't have to care about anything but what they want.

If the average Joe is an investor in an oil/energy business that makes more money from less restrictions on their refineries/plants, then they will tell everyone that global warming is a hoax so that their stock prices will go up.
Otherwise, the average Joe might be trying to fit in with their peers who all believe the same thing so that the group can feel less intimidated by people who have varying opinions on the subject.

You are presupposing that global warming is in fact caused by human actions, so that the average Joe wouldn't just be noting the obvious.
There doesn't have to be a reason for believing the truth.
There is obviously global warming, but the earth has warmed and cooled many times. Why is this different?
And did you see where EU scientists said that removing the smog cover was causing global warming?
Why do you want to believe it is controlable by stopping human related emissions?
Does that make you feel more secure, that maybe you can control it?

I'm not sure I would say it is a hoax, but would say that it is definitely unproven that recent warming, if in fact there is any, is due to any man made cause. The earth has been warming and cooling ever since it began. To say that any current warming is due to man made causes is simply unproven speculation. What do I gain by believing that? I get a better global economy that doesn't waste resources on a bogus unproven concern. An economy that doesn't impose job costing regulations based on bad science. By marginalizing environmentalist and their unproven theories, we can start drilling for oil in the US and become independent of foreign oil. Many scientists believe there is more oil, in the continental US than in the entire middle east, but we can't extract it because of environmental whackos, even though methods exist to drill for oil, in environmentally friendly ways. Environmentalists don't care if issues are supported by fact and science, as long as they have issues to complain about.

If it was found to be true that global warming is a hoax...then the trickle down affect will eventually reach the average joe
That means: No more Kyoto protocol, a slightly more even playing field for developed economies in respect to China...
That means: less expenditures on environmental standards (slightly less)
That means: more profit for large business, expanditure for big business, more jobs and cheaper products and services (because the bottom line will come down..)

What do I have to gain by believing that 2+2=4 is a hoax? I don't tweak the laws of nature for what may or may not 'feel good'.

He has the piece of mind that he believes the truth and not some cock-a-mamy bunch of pseudo-science. Look at the facts; The poles are getting colder and sea levels have not risen even a fraction of an inch in the past 100 years. He also can be glad he is not wasting his money on something that is strictly political and not an actual scientific event.

If he is not in a third world country that would be exempt from the emissions cutbacks, he benefits only by not losing his job or having it sent overseas to an exempt third world country.
Those decisions are never made by average joes. They are always made by people with political clout whose industries are impacted and who worry more about their immediate bottom line that long term inmpacts.

Sanity.
I remember the first time I heard about the global warming theory. I was in college. The professor questioned its validity scientifically.
Years later, Al Gore politicized the matter. I'm pretty sure the government has the most to gain with the theory, as it allows the government access to controlling business and levying huge fines, etc.

I don't think anybody who is actually educated thinks global warming is a hoax. Is it the reason for all strange weather events? No.
