The primary danger is an ectopic pregnancy which could greatly reduce possibility of future conception.
Thinking on a practical level it must be uncomfortable making love during the cycle not to mention being a bit of a sexual turn-off for the man. Rabbi Schmuly Boteach adds that sexual separation for 5 days per month makes the physical reuniting that bit more special.

No, (even though I am a male), I rarely have had intercourse when a women is on her period. It might be slightly uncomfortable.

If you are trying to get me to say its bad for you so your husband can't have sex w/ you, then I refuse to say it.

There is an increased risk of urinary tract infections having sex after your period is completed.

Bottom line, if lover can handle a bit of blood *unless you are heavy, then its all good. Still, wear protection.

Get your partner to wear a condom, so he doesn't get your blood inside his penis to avoid any health problems. It's still going to be very messy though.
