I'm currently a sophomore in highschool, planning to take the SAT I in order to apply to a school specifically for science and mathematics [NCSSM]. It was a spur of the moment decision, and now I must take the SAT on January 27th in order for my application to be accepted.

The last time I took the SAT was 3 years ago. At that time, I had both the flu and strept throat-- put simply, not a very good experience. I have old Kaplan SAT books [© 2002], but I'm not sure if they'd be much help with the new SAT.

My question is: Should I study books focused on the new SAT, so that I can get a better understanding of how the essay will be?

What is the best way to prepare in such a limited amount of time?

Links, references, and suggestions are all very much appreciated.

Thank you.

the best way to prepare for the SAT is to buy a book and learn the concepts. then take as many practice tests as possible. getting good grades is important to help you get into a good college, however it will only help you so far in the SAT. you can be smart and still not do well on the test. you can be dumb and do very well on the SAT...some people are just better at standardized testing which is why I would recommend buying a book to help you study. Princeton Review used to offer a book that has a strategy for studying in a short amount of time.
If you dont use their strategy, practice/learn things you have trouble on (focus on math, writing, or verbal).
As for the writing section, you should practice that and also look over the criteria they grade it on.
Good luck!

Twelve years of a good quality public education helps a lot. You probably haven't forgotten that much. At this point, study guides may help such as those that you cited. I bet the best thing you can do is have a good meal the evening before, take in a good movie, and consider that the worst thing that could happen if you do not do an excellent job is not really that bad. Relax, you will probably do just fine.

wow i'm in the same situation, cuz i'm a sophomore in high school too. i just practice for a half hour everyday, alternating the different subjects. you can follow any book, and yeah, I recommend either kaplan or princeton, or just anything, cuz all the books on those shelves are really good. or find an online course, cuz those help tremendously. good luck!
