its a funny thing about odysseus in the odyssey, he wheels and deals all around the meditterranean sea and a lot of people come off worse for wear from meeting him. punished (justly) by poseidon for the blinding of the cyclops and blown off course, you could say that odysseus is a practitioner of realpolitik, he does what he has to to get home. its still a matter for moot whether he is essentially a good man or just a very intelligent schemer who knows how to get what he wants. after all, he even killed his best friend to do that...
