I live in a cold place that is overcast most of the winter, and my apartment is situated so little direct sun gets in regardless. I've tried a few different kinds, but they always struggle in winter, and aren't as full and healthy as they were in my old place. Any suggestions?

I have a plant called "Fittonia Juanita" (fittonia argyroneura) that I actually bought at Safeway. It says it is sold by "Exotic Angel", vareity #129. It looks like a polka dot plant; green leaves with pink veins.

I kid you not when I say I have done my best to kill the thing unintentionally. I bought it for work and I had a desk that had no access to any natural light at all. All it had was the glare of the office lights. I forgot to water it for a week and it looked dead. I watered it an it "resurrected". I hate to admit I have done that a few times and it is healthy and growing even now.

It is a low light plant as well. :)

Lowest light house plant is what is commonly called a Peace Lilly. It may even bloom white flowers in your bathroom. A 6" one may cost $5.99. They take LOTS of water if given good light or little water if in a dark spot.

Nothing that needs light for flowering will do well in low light. Try ornamental leaf plants like philodendrons or ivy.

try the mother-in-law tongue, really tough plant
some of the ferns might be okay and the philodendrons,
when you look for plants - remember, the darker green the leaf, the less light required

Spider plants are good, especially the solid ones (as opposed to the variegated type, they absorb more light). Pothos ivy is good, as are dracena plants.

sunlight is definitely extra important. If the sunlight does not exist then there will be no existence. on the different hand without the moon there may well be no tides and so forth yet existence on the planet won't grow to be non-existent.

I've had good success with philodendrons. They can take a lot of abuse.

Bamboo - it grows quickly too and takes little effort.
