from the top.
Your fingernails don't scratch the wall, like when it rolls from the back.
Also the colors are apparent when rolled from the top.

Over the top toward you and I have an explanation that will settle the argument whenever it comes up....
If you look at printed toilet paper the print is only on the top half. Thus... if you put it on the roll coming over the top toward you the print shows everywhere. If you put it on so it rolls off the back and you have to reach toward the wall to get it the print doesn't show on that side because you're looking at the underside.

I'll change it so that it rolls over the front and comes from the top, it's just not natural to be pulled from the bottom!

Over the top. It keeps it closer at hand, and off the wall. It keeps you from having to reach under the roll, making contact more likely. When I worked as a nurse, the rolls were always installed 'over', so I've just kept doing it that way.

I prefer it forward over the roll; however, my cats have learned that they can pull it off that way, so I put it backward. That way, the loose end just flips around over and over when they pull down on the front of the roll ;-)

Ann Landers dealt with this issue on many different occasions -- it is quite remarkable how disputatious the issue was. My strong personal preference is to have the sheets toward the user, so that they can be easily grasped. I will turn around a roll that is humg the other way.

Over toward the front! Obviously!!
However, my wife, and every other woman I know does it the other way round!
I say: From the front means you can see what you're grabbing, and you can actually pull it easily without contorting your body.
They say "but it looks neater the other way round"
AAAARRRRGGH! It's in the toilet! Who cares?!!

Well if you have ever noticed all the hotels put it from the top but i like to be different and do it from the bottom.. This always gets my mom in a tissy so whenever I go to her house I always change her toilet paper so it comes from the bottom

Over - if it's under, the paper could rip due to the weight of a full roll.

It should come OVER.
Unless...
You have a small child or pet who you can't get to stop trying to roll all the tissue off the roll. In that case you should put it under to avoid frustration.
