I highly doubt somebody is reading every email. Most places have automated monitoring of email to look for keywords and potential security breaches.

It's not a real happy thought, but anyone who thought that their work eMail was NOT being monitored/capable of being monitored was living in a fool's paradise, IMO.
My brother works as a network administrator, and he tells me that in large companies, there just isn't the manpower for someone to be reading ALL eMails that come in or go out. In general, management starts monitoring when there is some sort of problem-- if an employee starts losing productivity, they might check to see if the employee is doing something via eMail or on the internet that causes a drop in productivity (i.e., employee is shopping eBay too much, or surfing the web). And there are keywords and other "flags" that could cause an employee's activity to get a look by management.
My brother basically told me that when you're sending or receiving eMail at work, you shouldn't send anything you wouldn't want your boss to see, and if you receive anything that could cause trouble (e.g., personal eMail with racist, sexist, or obscene attachments or connotations, immediately fire off a reply to the sender that you aren't allowed to receive such things. And definitely do not forward it to anyone!

I'm not sure what you are referring to in being required to monitor email. However, as you say, the company can do this. You are using their equipment to send the email, so they own the electronic transmission. Even if you use Yahoo or some other mail system, you are using their internet connection, so again they have a right to look at what is being sent.

tasting bile? Close but not yet. They will have a very hard time enforcing this. Also most computers keep track of all activity anyway unless there is software added to the machine. you can thank good ole Bill Gates for that. ALL internet history is put in a file on the machine.

companies have been doing it for awhile no big deal just don't do private personal emails from work its no big deal they also check what internet sites you visit
and no business is required to do it by anyone except the top people inside the company itself no governement laws are forcing any company to do it they do it to save their own butts and keep employees from doing illegal acts while at work

Doesn't thrill me either. I worked in a place where everyone had MSN Messenger (supposedly for work purposes) and my boss would sit there for hours everyday monitoring everyone's conversations...talk about being productive!!

As long as you're not doing anything wrong...
Being offensive or spending too much time goofing off then I think you're fine...
I know they just passed a law requiring this. I'm sure this will help them in the case that YOU sue your company..
