BMW is the best auto maker for the common folk.
I have no idea why peopleslag them off.
Although some BMW drivers can be arseholes. Perhaps that is why.
I don't drive BMW for image. I drive itbecause it is the best ride and drive in the world. An excitement and enjoyment every commute like no other.
Some people might not undertsand that,

Hi Redbmw1994....
Going by your name, i'd take a guess you own an e36 318is?
Anyway, I've owned a bmw, loved it while i had it, and love it even more now and miss it since i sold it.
I miss the quality of everything, the little touches like the auto dim rearview mirror, the gas struts that keep the bonnet up instead of them nasty pole things etc. Most of all, i miss the drive - it's one of the most involving cars i've driven, was nice to drive in traffic, and exciting to push it a little on open roads, off round abouts in the wet etc.
I'm so so bored of driving a front wheel drive car! (looking to buy a 530d sport after xmas).
As for bmw's being the best car in the world - i suppose it all depends what you're looking for doesn't it?
I doubt they make the best 4x4, 2 seater or saloon, - in the past... maybe, but not any more.
I can't say who's the best, don't think anyone could as there's so many other cars in other countries.
BMW do make great cars, but so do audi do they not?
Early a3 quality could have been alot better, but look at the new RS4! now thats a great car (would be my lottery winnings car over the m5 any day)
Vauxhall have also come a long way with their cars in terms of quality and looks, but they don't drive like a bmw! - but it all depends what you like doesn't it.
I've never really like Mercs as they've never been my thing, but some of the new stuff is nice. Jaguar - i've never liked them, but i love the x type estate!
I couldgo on forever, but making such a claim about them being the best cars on the road is asking for arguements lol
Oh, i think the reason they get slagged off:
alot of Reps get flash looking BM's thru work and (can)drive quite aggressively to get where they're going, because BMW can also be seen as being a bit of a snob as you're trying to do one better than the next guy in a vauxhall - you get slated more than the looney behind you in the vauxhall doing the same thing.
Also, younger drivers aim towards nice cars as soon as they can fork out for the insurance, BMW's can be one of their choices and they can also drive like loonies etc which asks for a slaging.
BMW's are prone to having their windows tinted too, which in some people's eyes can add to the snobbery factor, etc
And then there's the 'drug dealer' label too......

This is a response to Lawyer: AUDI is the best car on the road not BMW with that "forced" engine!
Ahhahaha! I leased in 2/2003 a loaded Audi TT: 6 speed, 225HP, Baseball leather int, this car was loaded! Being from Long Island NY, I loved it in the snow. When it was time to return the car, they didn't make the TT for 06. I decided to lease a BMW Z4 3.0si.
Lawyer, I "dare" you to get me to switch back after owning this puppy for 6 months!
The main issue is, there is no turbo lag like the Audi!!
In the Audi, 5th gear blew and they had it in the shop for a week
In the Audi, the glove box broke in my hand on a summer day
In the Audi, the Xexon light blew after 1 year
In the Audi, the trunk was always damp
In the Audi, it needed more power
I did love the Quattro
________________________
The BMW? NO turbo lag, this car does mid 13's
The BMW? The 6 speed shifts like a hot knife in butter
The BMW? The car sounds like an F1 Race car when you swing past 4500 rpm
The BMW? The trunk is dry like a fine wine
The BMW? Push a button and the top folds really tight. No latch to pull like the Audi
The BMW? The glove box SUXS!
I do miss the Quattro when the bad weather comes but I'll leave my Silver Beemer at home waiting for a sunny day.
Ha! So there LAWYER! And for everyone else, don't be a playa' hater! I love cars and I'm no better than anyone else in my little Silver bullet.

Y'see, your not doing yourself any favours with the tone of your question, you've fallen into the trap of letting them wind you upwhich is what they wanted.
But besides that, there are some slight problems with the statement 'best in the world' because it something that can't be quantified.
There are also a few issues with BMW's that you might have over looked.
First, the current X3 is a terrible car and i know because i had one, it has a terrible ride, never feels 100% secure when pushed and for an off road car is completely useless in anything deeper that half an inch of mud.
Mine was shockingly bad for reliability, lots of plastic fitting broke and everyone i've spoken to with an x3 has had numerous problems.
Let's hope the new one is a million miles better.
Second this is the 1 series, what a complete mistake that was.
For a start it is well over priced for what it is, you can buy much better cars for the same money. The back end is ugly and just generally dissapointing in every area.
The biggest problem with the 1 series is that there is one!
Just imagine you've just spend £80,000 on a M6, a top of the range ultimate prestige Aston Martin money directors car, it's sat there in your garage gleaming, you pull open the garage door and you see the chrome grill sparkling in the sunshine.
Then you notice the scumbag neighbour who lives down the road in the run down house, the one on benefits because he's never worked and the overgrown garden full of bits of mk 3 Escort.
He open his garage and there sticking out is a also a gleaming grill that looks very similar, he just bought a 1 series on 5 years finance from Carcraft!
See what i'm getting at? Snobbery, yes it is but that's what sells the BMW top of the range cars, name, prestige, the badge and that's all gone up sh*t creek because they brought out a bargain basement model just to make money.
By doing that, they've devalued the brand and will lose top end sales in the long run.
Maybe not for a few years but they will.
BMW have problems just like every other manufacturer but with BMW, they've got too greedy and for them, the problems are of their own making.
1 year ago i went shopping for a new car and went into the BM show room, it was a little busy but not packed and yet not one sales person bothered to approach or acknowlege me.
Ok, i might not look the millionaire type but i was there seriously looking to spend money.
I approached a salesman myself and after a half hearted 10 minute chat i left my number because they didn't have what i was interested, I even had to ask them for a broshure or i would have walked out with nothing.
1 year later i STILL haven't had that phone call.
What did they miss out on? Sale of a series one maybe?lol
Not quite, i spent 50 thousand pounds on a Porsche 911, yes, they lost 50k because they couldn't be bothered.
Now tell me, best in the world?

That claim they are the best cars on the road? Um, are you sure? Personally I don't like them at all because if anybodies looking for a slightly up-market car and have NO imagination its always BMW. Why? They are good cars to drive, but Jaguar are better and no more expensive. And if you don't need rear seats, try a Noble. Will make mincemeat of ANY BMW including M5/M6 which are both much more expensive and looks a damn sight cooler too.

if you knew what you were talking about you would realise that any other make of car is the best in the world . BMW cars only suit people who have there head up there own back side . so they are not very comfortable to start with . obviously you havent tried a real car yet , maybe you should pop back to reality now and again .

Got a friend that works at a BMW dealership. He drives a BMW 7-series. Even he admits they are over-rated and overly expensive to repair. He and I have seen bizarre electrical problems. A month ago a '05 M5 came in for a failed emmissions test. Because of carbon buildup in the heads, they had to totally disassemble the engine and clean it. Cost the customer $10,000 to repair. Not under warranty.

BMW's are good cars, but who cares what people drive. If you like it fine, if you don't like it - don't buy one - by slagging anything off belonging to someone else is just advertising the fact that you can not afford it. The best reaction you can give is a complement.

i know MANY people who have stopped buying BMWs not becuase of their reputaion, but because they are not special cars anymore. you sit in a new BMW and you could be in ANY car, even a cheapish car. the bottom line is they are not the luxury, and special cars they used to be. Even Mercedes has gone down a similar route at the moment, you do not feel like you are sat in an expensive car. and when you are paying large amounts of money for a car you want to feel like you have had your moneys worth!

I disagree with what Alex P said, jaguars used to be nice, but they're shitty now that Ford took over. BMW's are definitely the best. It's my dream to own a sexy Z4 or M6 convertible some day :)
