You are right you can not sue and get compensation for hurt feelings. I would not except the apology but I have only see the one. I think he had a break down and I hope he gets help for the breakdown. I do believe that truth comes out at the worst times and his just happened to be in public. I wouldn't waste my time or feelings on him as they know that they (themselves) are not bad people and did nothing to be treated that way. I was very happy to find out that the owner of the club gave everyone there money back

To justify paying for damages then you have to prove that damages were incurred.
For instance if one of the hecklers had a psychological problem with self esteem then damages could be paid for some doctor visits.
You could argue that the hecklers were trying to extort Kramer, since no damages were incurred and a sincere apology was issued.

We don't know that they really feel karmically, metaphysically, morally-etc entitled to compensation. But they apparently do think that they have a sufficiently decent shot at being *held* to be *legally* entitled to it such that they can either win an award in court or (this seems like a likelier goal:) leverage a settlement. also, even if their case is completely baseless and idiotic under relevant substantive law, there might still be other payoffs (15 min fame? sympathy? etc?) that they foresee that make the lawsuit worthwhile.
if you were in their position and some empirical oracle or your management consultant regression analyst brother or whoever came and told *you* that the expected value of bringing a claim was, i dunno, $500k, would you decline to sue? if so, why? "because i don't deserve it"? please.

He shouldn't have to pay. If someone's video camera hadn't been on that night, and the media didn't run it into the ground, we wouldn't even be talking about this.
p.s. I'm sick of all this apology business lately. What are we all- little kids apologizing because we're made to, not because we want to. What's the value in that?!?!

He shouldn't. In a rational world he wouldn't. But they hired Gloria Allred, an attorney whose primary occupation is issuing press releases; calling news conferences & generating headlines. To avoid being called names in public & being blacklisted Richards may pay them something.

I wonder if Mr. richards could turn around and counter sue for the things they were saying to him before he went off.
Those type of people make me sick, almost everyone feels they are entitled these days.

Because we are too much of a litigious society. Anybody who thinks they can sue to get some money from a "rich" guy will do so.
What he did was wrong but certainly those who were offended deserve NO money.

The "awww I'm a victim" mindset and "money will make my little feelings feel better" crap. Not a dime except give them their money back for the ticket.

Celeberties are easy targets. If you are a celeberty you have money. These people are just looking for some easy money, which they will probably get.
