Hey guys,
my computer is starting to become slow, I dont think it has viruses or spyware because I have checked sooo many times, but it is starting to annoy me. It is taking forever to load things and it is just all round slow!
What can I do?? Should I restore XP? Is there anything else GOOD that I can do where I dont lose all my files?
I have done a disk clean up and defragmenter and it didnt do anything to help the speed of the computer (well it did at first but it is slow again...just 2 weeks later)

Please help!!! Im sick of this computer!!

Follow the instructions below and if the problem persists, check your RAM; you may need to increase it. Or go to your Add/Remove programs list and see if there are any programs that you do not use and that you want to remove them.

HOW TO DO A THOROUGH CLEAN UP (Windows XP)
While you are connected to the Internet do the following:
1. Click on tools ... Internet options. There you will see three buttons next to each other... "Delete Cookies" ... "Delete Files" and "Settings." Also, below the settings button you will see another one "Clear history."
2. Click on "settings" - go to "Edit" - Click on "select all" - Go to files, click delete and wait till all Internet trash files are gone.
3. Go back and click on "delete cookies" and wait till all cookies are gone
4. Go back and click on "Delete files," put a check mark on the little white square shown on the small window that will open, click OK and wait for a little.
5. Go back and click on "Clear history", click “yes” and you are done.
6. Now do a check disk and a defrag, then restart your computer and see if the problem is resolved.
7. If the problem persists, get on the internet and look in the Yahoo search for the Tune-Up Utilities 2006 site; go to that site and download their free trial program, familiarize your self with it and use it to clean up your registry automatically. It is an excellent little program and does wonders with PC maintenance tasks along many other helpful and useful chores.
8. If all fails go to windowa updates and download any and all updates.

Hope this helps

HERE IS ANOTHER WAY:
While you are connected to Internet, go to “Tools” … “Internet Options,” “Content” tab … “Auto Complete button” … click on “clear forms” and you are finished.

Reloading your computer can speed it up, but you don't have to lose your files. You can purchase a USB thumb drive and copy your files to it. You might also consider an external USB drive and use NTBackup.
Your computer could be overheating if it has an Intel processor. When an Intel processor gets hot it automatically slows down to reduce heat. Run the Intel Processor ID utility (downloadable from http://www.intel.com) to see if the correct speed is being utilized. I think it is called CPUID.
If it is an AMD processor be sure the Motherboard multiplier is still set correctly in the BIOS.
Do you have any kind of indexing utilities running on your computer? Like a Google desktop search or the Windows Indexing service? The Google desktop search software only slows the machine down when you first install it, but it might have a problem for whatever reason. You can remove the Windows indexing service by going to the Control Panel Add/Remove programs and Add/Remove Windows Components. Click to uncheck the Indexing service and click Next to proceed removing this service.
Windows Defender seems to slow down a computer. Try removing it. Also, if you have more than one spyware and antivirus scanner all running realtime protection at the same time this could slow down your computer. Just have one firewall, one anti-virus and one anti-spyware scanner checking realtime at a time.
If you're running the same spyware scanner over and over again it might not be finding the spyware 100% I have often used the free online spyware scan from Trendmicro with good results. Go to http://www.trendmicro.com and click the free on-line spyware scan.
Some HP printer software will slow down a computer. If you still have the disk that came with the printer try un-installing this software from the Add/Remove applet in the Control Panel. Or add more RAM to your system.

I had the same problem of my PC slowing down. and like you, I already had current anti-virus software, and current anti-spyware software, so that was not the problem.

So, what I did to speed up my PC response was to do a DAILY file cleanup on my PC.

This really helped. I was amazed.

I think that since I use a website email browser, that I was using up a lot of temporary space to read my inbox of email. Even though I log off my email browser, it still had "used up" available space. By doing a daily file cleanup, it freed up that previously used space - so then my free space was no longer fragmented all over the disk drive.

There are several free software downloads for PC file cleanup software - use "google" to search for this, then read the recommendations on them, and chose one to use.

I find that everyday, I am able to cleanup much disk space.

One thing people don't think about too often is defragging their drive. They dont realize what it can do. Also, maybe add a little memory to it, and cleaning the drive. Go to start, run, type: cleanmgr

run it, free up some space, defrag, and add some memory. you should notice a huge diffrence.

even if nothing is wrong its usually smart to reinstall your operating system every once and a awhile because it naturally slows down besides ad ware and viruses etc... starting clean every 6 months or so is a great way to keep everything running in top shape.
