the anti-lock brakes are not working, you have brakes but, they are just like regular brakes, with no computer assist for stopping

This is assuming that your car does not pull hard left or right when stopping.

When the brake light stays on it is a sign of problems with your master cylinder. Or you are low on brake fluid.

As far as the anti lock lights could be one of the sensors bad.

Either way you need to take it to a shop and have it checked out and fixed. Modern braking systems are too complicated to try and troubleshoot over the internet.

Have it checked by a mechanic you trust. It could be that there is a problem with your anti-lock brakes. It could be that it is an older car, and there is something wrong with the computer that makes those lights come in. It would definitely be worth getting checked out before you get out somewhere and realize you have no brakes!

Try this. If you have used the parking brake recently when you disengaged it, it may not have seated compleatly off of the switch. This will cause the "brake" light to remain on and should also deactivate the ABS system. Might need adjusting or the spring might be weak.

Your brake fluid could be too low. Check that and if this isn't the problem you should have it checked. It could signify a more serious problem with your brake system.

have your pads and rotors checked. if your low on brake fluid in the master cylinder its a good indication that your pads are wore down, the fluid just dosent evaporate

That means you need to get those things checked out. It's the car's way of telling you there is a problem that needs to be fixed.
