The US was increasingly getting involved WWII prior to Pearl Harbor, but it was the final event that lead to the US enter to the fight.
The Japanese chose to attack because the US introduced an oil embargo on Japan as a response to that country's aggression in the Pacific. Japan had attacked China and was threatening the rest of the region, including Australia.
Germany and Japan had an alliance which is what led the US to engage in Europe as well.

The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. This attack was not a direct attack on America. It was an attack on our naval base there to provoke a reaction. Hawaii, like Alaska at the time did not belong to the United States. Hawaii and Alaska didn't become states until 1959.

65 years ago, Japan attacked our base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.
Efw- the continetial US refers to the mainland (48 states). Hawaii and Alaska are not part of the continental US, since they are seperated, by either and ocean or another country, they are part of the United States, just not continental. Pearl Harbor, is in Hawaii, therefore not continental US

The attack on Pearl Harbor 1941-07-12, at 0750 this was supposedly a surprise attack. But documents released just a few years ago show we knew. We knew the date, and place. We just let it happen.

I believe it was the sinking of the Lusitania. A passenger ship purportedly carrying war materials and passengers. The name of the ship would have an enlightening meaning to those who have studied the subject in depth. Pearl harbor was also important. The fact is that there was a collaboration between Germany and Japan prior to Pearl Harbor at the end of the first event, resulting in the so called second war. It did help the economy but at what price.
