Just do you know, your goldfish will need a 20gallon tank.

Marbles should be fine, just rinse them first in hot water. I would not use other household items, many have come into contact with toxins or chemicals.

Marbles would be fine, but wash them first. Also, my brother has dropped many little tiny toys in my sister's fish tank. He hasn't died, but I wouldn't do it on purpose unless you buy special fish tank objects at the pet store.

By the way, when you wash the marbles DONT USE SOAP! It can eventually kill the fish. Use boiling hot water, and that will clean all the germs off.

A good habbit you can exercise is to boil your articles before inserting them into the aquarium if the material is durable enough to endure the heat.

This will kill most of the bacteria or germs on your ornaments, and reduce the chance of hurting your fish in the process. Also, any chemically inert materials can be placed into your aquarium after proper cleaning and soaking such as Terracotta flower pots for makeshift houses or caves, PVC pipe is a commonly used item for breeding and caves. A friend of mine has an undergravel network in his tank for his bottom feeder to roam around inside of.

Saving dirty tank water to soak ornaments in before you place them in your aquarium will allow it to accustom itself to the chemistry, build algae, and not effect your biological filter as drastically when you put it into the habitat.

Zoe has another excellent point: your goldfish will require 20 gallons for living space. Goldfish unlike others will only grow to suit their habitats, therefore leaving them in a bowl will reduce their growth substantially, and often cause physical defects or abnormalities in adult fish. This can effect its ability to swim, breathe or heck go to the bathroom... Get it a suitable home before you make the one it has now pretty.

Generally, no. Marbles would be ok, but wash them very good then let them dry before putting them in. Rocks are a different story, the wrong rocks can release chemicals that can kill your fish.
