It needs to be very hot and contain little moisture. If the log is not hot enough, the material will not have enough energy to undergo combustion. If the log is too wet, combustion will not occur for lack of oxygen; basically, the reaction will be smothered.

If you have a pile of wood, I've always been fond of using birthday candles - for instance, use one candle to heat up another another so the wax partially melts.
Lay that candle on one of the logs and light the wick.
It's always best to build a fire with smallish branches and logs, and use the ignition of those to make larger ones catch fire.

Start with kindling (like small wood shavings etc. which will easily catch fire) and then feed small sticks, then larger sticks until you have a really good hot fire going.
Then, and only then, will you be able to add large pieces like logs which will gradually start to burn.

Make sure that your |Chimney has been swept, if it hasn't, sweep it before using (or get it swept).

Don't try and burn logs cut down this year, only burn 'seasoned' wood, that the sap has dried in. Stack fresh cut logs for next years fires and burn seasoned wood this year (can buy in if you have to for first year).

Get some dry sticks (especially if your logs are 'rain' wet), clean your grate out, fill with rolled up balls of newspaper, put sticks on top of this and two smallest logs on top of sticks. Put full draw on grate and light newspaper. When your logs are burning well (glowing red), cut down the draw and add another log........can't beat it (I'm sitting in front of mine now!
