I will spend a lot of time in Africa in the next 2 years, and in order to get Internet access there I plan to sign up for satellite Internet access through BGAN / Inmarsat. They charge per megabyte of traffic, and the prices are steep -- around $6 per megabyte. What can I do on my side to minimize the traffic to save on the cost? For example, how do I specify to load Internet pages in text mode only and skip the graphics? Any other suggestions on traffic minimization will be very appreciated! I intend to use Internet for browsing around and reading news, doing research, trading stocks, getting my email, etc.

Thank you very much!

You can turn images off in IE, its somewhere in the tools options security etc

Or you can try lynx, a text based browser

Absolutely, turn off the graphics and sounds. I do the same right now because we have dial-up at home and we never get more than 24 kbps. But that's far better than our 0 kbps non connection when we live in Honduras most of the year. Satellite is our only option there and there are no authorized dealers willing to install, even with the $3000 price tag they quote. That's just one more reason it's a third world country.
