Without abusing alcohol and/or Xanax? I've been flying ever since I can remember, but I became freakishly afraid of it like 3 years ago. And no, it didn't have anything to do with 9/11. I know it's unlikely that any particular plane will crash, but to imagine it happening is just too horrifying. And no one can really guarantee it won't happen... Help! I have to fly in a month and I don't want to go through the stress and panic attacks and pill-popping.

I myself get the jitters still to this day. I have great luck with a double martini and a Xanax about 30 minutes before take off. Other than that remedy lol the only way to really get over it is to keep trying to calm yourself down and convince yourself that you are going to be ok.

I have this problem too, and I actually have a flight tomorrow, that is 14 hours long! I fly a lot. Just to give you an idea, over the next 14 days I will have 8 flights.
I always bite my nails, pop the xanax, etc. But in my head, a few thoughts help.
For one, I always watch the flight attendants. They fly everyday! Can you imagine? Everyday, for years and years. And the calmness on their faces as they read and chat during take-offs and landings always rubs off on me.
I also remind myself that I have a lot to live for, a lot of people who I love, and that it isn't my time to go. I say a little prayer... and then have a glass of wine!
I know you want to avoid drinking, or taking rx's, but, that is what they are for! It's use, not abuse. If you need it, why suffer through the anxiety and the raised blood pressure and the worry?
Good luck, and say a little prayer for my upcoming flights!!!! I'll say one for yours ;)

Notice my name is pricetravel
I hate to fly. Same as you. I don't blame you. The stress of what they are putting people through, with the possibility of terrorism, germs, etc....

Having said that: If I HAVE to fly, I
get into a really easy to read fun book a day or so before I leave for the airport. I start reading it when I arrive, take off, etc..
It really does keep my mind off things.

We have a 3 hour drive to and from the airport. Plenty of time to think of all the possibilities.

Try to take the fastest traveling times in flights.
Non stop versus connections. Drive to another nearby airport if there is better service.

Good luck

I used to be afraid of flying. I would stay up all night the night before the flight so that I was so tired when I got on the plane that I slept the whole way.
Now that I'm a bit older, I figure if it's gonna crash, so be it. I'm not afraid anymore.

it depends on why that fear is holding you back. what are you afraid of? flying is just like going in a car. you can't even tell the difference. other than you're in the air. but you don't even notice until you look out the window. if you're scared to look down.. don't. but once you become more comfortable.. looking outside and seeing what's below you from above is the most beautiful thing. trust me. i've flown many many many times. i've even flew a plane. my dad's a piolet! =]

There are a lot of people like that actually. My girlfriend is actually one of them, and she reacts the same way as you do...xanex and alcohol before boarding. I really just don't care. You are going to die one day anyway, atleast if your plane goes down, you will be in the news and papers...lol. I really don't know what to tell you besides: You just have to get over it. If you are going somewhere in the same country, drive, and if you are going over seas, I hope you dont get sea sick.

Just do it. Think about it, if the plane crashes you'll never have anything to worry over again!
Any one of use could fall over dead at any moment. It is something we cannot control. Let it go. Breath deeply and take control of your life. You can do it!

Try hypnotherapy. It really works!! I have been treated with that for other problems and it really works!! Search for a reputed hypnotherapist in your area and try it out. (and no they don't get you to bark like a dog against your will etc...)
