Ignore them unless it becomes physical. Trying to antagonize someone only to be ignored, really pisses people off.

Whoa, what do you mean by "I want to get out of this rut?" If you need peace of mind by giving it back, you aren't being randomly targeted. You may be walking around subconsciously looking for a fight. You're not a weak target of bullies or you wouldn't be giving it back.

Well, you may have the urge to react...but you'll get their goat more if you ignore. A reaction is what they desire (just like the people that troll this site and post offensive and outrageous things). If you ignore such people, they may try again...but then they'll give up in disgust.
They just want attention...don't give them what they want. People who are nasty for no reason don't deserve the effort it takes you to acknowledge their existence.

first go to them and ask them maybe you did something wrong and they you know and you don't care so they want to make you like miserable then if they ignored you and didn't answer you leave them and try to find a new friends or a new group to sit with but if things went to bad and you couldn't bear it anymore react just like you did and ask you friends to help you with it and if it didn't work go to someone older and ask for help but if you were right at the end don't you ever give up except if they come to you and apologies then you forgive them but be careful for awhile until you make sure that's everything is back to normal. i hope you cross this problem good luck

If you mean targeted as in someone is going to hurt you, someone is saying nasty stuff to you that you dont like.
You should go to the Police.
If you do fight you will probily be the one with the Police.
Good Luck.

It is so much better to ignore....what they want is a reaction from you so if you give it..you are feeding right into them....they love that...they hate being ignored! Be the better person and don't give them a second look....good luck

I would ignore it, and remove myself from the situation as much as possible. If that's not an option, you may need to confront the person.

Ignore them, people who are that fickle are not worth your attention. Unless it's affecting your life or job, leave it alone. In the end, you'll feel better about yourself.

Ignore. If you act like it doesn't bother you, they will stop because they aren't getting a reaction from you.
