As per law, you are entitled to a free credit report once a year - the website https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp provides this service. It has links to the three major Credit Agencies - TransUnion, Experian and Equifax. It lets you get your credit report from all three sites (you will have to provide your ssn, etc to verify its you - NO CREDIT CARD IS NEEDED).
Since you can get a free report from each agency only once in 12 months - you should try one agency at a time... then try the next one another 4 months later... this way you can use the website 3 times.

In certain states you are entitled to a free yearly credit report: https://www.annualcreditreport.com ; through your address(es) and social security number they should be able to verify who you are and issue you the report.
If you search for "free credit report", you'll find some others that say they are free, but they might not be. That website I listed is the only one I know that is free.
