No different than I do when it is used on the streets every day by people of color calling out to one another. We hear this refrain all the time in our mixed neighborhood.
What was wrong was not his anger, and offensive to me, was his reference to hanging people from trees. What an asinine thing to say.

I feel that although what he said was degrading, he does have a right to say what he wants. People are going to say things that offends everyone in some way we just have to deal with it.

doesn't surprise me at all, most white americans use the term amongst themselves as afluently as if they were humming the star spangled banner or their favorite country western song. actually i thought it was hilarious, because i've always seen michael richards with his n*gger ranting as stereotypical behavior of american whites. intimidating bunch aren't they?
