I know it records shows for you and stuff, but do you have to pay a monthly fee? if so how much? Or do you just have to buy the tivo and that's it? Any information you can give me would be appreciated, I'm thinking of getting it as a Christmas Present for my family. Thanks!

For 300 dollars on tivo.com you can purchase a dual tuner series 2 tivo with 1 year service. Or you can buy it for 70 dollars and pay month to month. I have had it for years at first thru directv and then as the stand alone units. I love it, it is so worth the money and definately buy the two tuner, the single tuner is free, but just not as good.
It will enable you to pause live tv for up to thirty minutes, you can set up what is called season passes where you put in the name of a show and how often you want it to record and it finds and records all of them for you, you can speficy new only or repeats such as,, you can make wishlists for stuff you want to watch but isnt on and it will make alist of it for you whenever it does come on. You can record two shows at once, and watch stuff in your now playing list which is all your recordings, or you can record one and watch one live channel.
THe only thing is that you can only record one digital channel at a time, You couldnt record lets say HBO and Showtime at the same time, because your cable box can only descramble on digital channel at time. For me analog channels are 1-99 and I can record two of those at once, or one analog and one digital. I currently have two tivo units and pay 35 a month for the service for both, you can get better deals on it now im sure with it being christmas time and all.
Well worth the money, once you have it you will wonder how you ever manged without.
Oh and to make it even better they ship pre activated all you do is set it up and it includes everything you need for set up and a very easy step by step poster showing you how to do it.

You have to pay a monthly subscription fee in addition to purchasing the Tivo receiver. As for costs, they are
$19.95 per month for a 1 year contract
$14.95 per month for a 2 year contract
$12.95 per month for a 3 year contract
You can pre-purchase a 1 year subscription for $199, or a 2 or 3 year subscription for $299.

Yes there is a monthly fee. Usually about $5.99/mo average.
Different providers chg differently. Check with your cable or satellite provider.
