My son is wanting a piglet, not so much a potbellied piglet, but he would take that also, but he really just wants one. It seems very hard to narrow a place down on the internet to find out information on them, such as health and food, plus prices on breeds, he wants it for a pet only. This is not because of the movie either he has wanted one since summer but while we were researching everyone said that it wasn't the time of year to get them??? Any info would be helpful, thanks..especially the age to acquire and what time of year they are born..? Thanks in advance..I know they get very big and there are different breeds, we do not want this for meat please only as a pet..Pigs are smart.

Greetings & Oinks,

As a former pig mom, let me give you some basic info. There are many pig breeds, and most of them require the same care. It all depends on how much space you have. Will this be a house pig? Barn pig? Pot belly pigs can get to 300lbs... Poland pigs can get over 1000lbs.

Pigs are VERY smart.. Smarter than dogs.. Easy to train, even litter box train. BUT, they can be VERY stubborn. Pig headed, even. If you have a large pig, they can deliver a bite you will never forget. I've had two ER trips due to getting caught by a tusk.

Pigs require yearly shots & routine medical care. This will include spay or neutering. You DO NOT want to be around a male intact pig. They REEK.. smell like rotten tuna.. but it's an attractant to the females. Unspayed females have high cancer risks. They do go thru PMS and will urinate all over the place (even if litter trained) during their time of the month to attract a mate. THEREFORE, you NEED to locate a vet that will see your pig BEFORE you get one.

Pigs are not legal in MANY places... esp most large cities. Pet pigs, like pot bellies, are considered swine/livestock. Check with you county office BEFORE getting one. Many people have lost their pets in a legal battle.

Most piglets will be born in the spring. Pigs will breed anytime of year, but it's easier for the breeder to have the piglets in warmer weather.

I would greatly recomment you to visit this website:

great info an all things pet pig. Legal issues, local vets, health care, etc.

Squeals!

I wouldn't get the pig unless you live in the country. They do get very pig, but if you keep them clean they won't smell. Either way, if you live in a neighborhood there are tons of stories of people having to give up the pig because most still classify one as livestock. To them it's like having a cow living in your backyard. If not, I would go ahead and get them. Potbellied pigs are usually the one to get for pets, although I guess it'd be okay to have a regular breed. I think they're born in the spring.

Check out your local high school and see if they have an Ag (Agriculture) Deparment. Or, check with the 4H or FFA organizations. They can tell you the breeds that do best in your area and where to purchase them. They can also answer all your questions.
