Usually there will be a note at the bottom of the menu (ex. Parties over 6 charged 20% service charge). If that is the case, then probably yes. But if you are thoroughly dissatisfied with the service, then ask to speak to the manager. I'm sure he would take off the service charge in hopes that you would visit again.

The law as I understand it is the restaurant has to say up front i.e. on menu displayed outside it that it applies a service charge and how much. You also have the right not to pay for a service that is not of a reasonable standard.

If you don't like the service, don't pay the service charge how else are you supposed to eat your food if its not served up to you.
It's just another way for them to top up the price of the food. the serving staff rarely get the full amount anyway, most is creamed for management. DON'T PAY.

By law you are actually only entitled to pay for a meal what you think it was worth... FACT. however payin a fiver for a fifty quid meal is fine but the owner has the right to refuse future entry.. This is LAW. why all food can be sent back to manufactuerer for full refund if it is poor quality

i'm surprised that a lot of folk are wanting to pay a lot of money to eat. some places have expenditures thrice what the food is worth, and that i recommend taking into consideration an excellent income.
