Some of the paper mounts that enclose them are printed with the initials "VF", "F", "VG" and "IET", what does this mean. How do I determine their grade? How do I determine their value? Who would appraise them? Any answers would be helpful. Thanks.

either take them to a jewelry store, coin or collector shop. The appraisal might cost about $50, but its well worth it. Ive been collecting gemstones for about a 2 years now and the appraisals are expensive, but the stones make up for it. Good luck!

Forget jewelry stores and antique dealers, go to a coin dealer. If he has a store and has been in business for sometime, then he must be honest or he would not last long. VF stands for very fine, F is fine,VG is very good and I have no idea what IET is. Now if you want to do this right, it will cost you a little up front. You need a book to help you grade the coins. ANA grading standards is around $14.95. It has pictures of the coins in different grades, so just match them up as best as you can. Now the price guides that are easy available like Coinage or Coins magazines have basically retail prices and you should get 40% plus or minus less than what is listed. This then gives you an idea as to a coins value. If it lists for a $100 in the grade you think it is and someone offers you $10 you know something is wrong. Yes you can grade a coin wrong, but not that wrong. Write down the price for the grade you think it is plus the price for the next grade below and the one above. If the coins are all in holders then they should have the date, the mint mark and the grade on it. If not put what you think. Hope this helps, more questions Email me.

You can look up most of the prices on the Internet, http://www.bestcoin.com/, the initials are "VF" very fine, "F" fine, "VG" very good, "IET" is a term I don't know.

But the first thing I would do is just look up the price ranges of the coins, that way you will know the range of what they should be worth.

Most coin dealers could appraise the coins, don't accept ANY offer to buy them from you, until you get at least two appraisals first.

You can also send them in to be apprised, research the company first before you send coins, and take pictures before you send them in.

But from the sounds of it most of the coins are not going to worth much, but you can always hope.

Hope it helped good luck.

Look on eBay using completed auctions search, that will give you the "Market Value"
VF means Very Fine
F means Fine
VG means Very Good
IET ???

You can send your coins to a grafing service to have them slabbed in plastic and professionally graded. NGC, PCGS, and ANACS are all reliable grading services. Each offer the service for a fee. Having your coins professionally graded may increase their value.
