I didn't! I just read the article below that outlines that after a womans family in India gave a dowery and the woman got married, her in-laws demanded more money and her husband eventually killed her.

What do you think about this?

Sweety its sad but true. These are third world countries that stay true to their traditions and cultures. It may seem a little old fashioned or even barbaric to us but its a way of life for them.

Yes, I am aware there are still dowery. It's a part of some cultures, traditions, and religions.

What you read isn't normal behavior. If there was something seriously wrong with the Dowery, they would send the woman back and keep what was given to them. The woman might have problems then (depending on the culture/traditions/religion) and prefer to kiill herself then deal with the problems that follow. Both those aren't so normal though.

Women in India that are married into a family are supposed to be the caregiver of their husband's parents and if any other relatives are in the house they may end up takeing care of them, too. So it can make sense for the in-laws to complain and have great say in these matters. If you were expecting someone to move into your house and help with chores and take care of any animals or people they drag into the house with them,.. you might have a fit if they just do nothing at all but add to problems and let their friends and animals trash the place... it would make a bad roommate at the least.

Added: Alot of the people to answer are actting like this is only in third world countries and they are all stoneage or atleast " 10th century". This is completely untrue. These are not third world countries [that you are currently talking about and not only third world countries have Dowery]. This happens in the United States,.. people may just be use to it being part of the gifts when they see it at weddings,... but there are people in the United States that call it and act as if it is a Dowery. If you went to India,.. you might find yourself some place where the technology is ahead of yours but there is preference in some house holds to not own certain technologies because they damage things like their floors or clothes and take away their family time because they are busy all day with their sceduals.

I am going to separate the issues at hand into two subjects.
I know in India the girls family has to pay the man's family. A practice I am against.
Her husband killing her over money is the basis of it all and let him be punished by God for committing murder.
No wonder there is a saying:
Money is the root of all evil. With things going on like this it's no wonder some one came up with it.

It is apart of the culture. It is harder to look though the window then to live in the culture.

When I married my husband we had a marriage contract. In the contract my husband was to give me $20,000. We are Muslim.

The more that we try to understand the outside world the more we will understand ourselves

Yes, and it has been going on for centuries in many third world countries. India being one of them. Where they also have arranged marriages. It is part of their culture. God bless****

Yes. I'm not for it, but I am not in the position to tell someone else that their traditions and beliefs are wrong. (They probably don't agree with mine either.)

btw... I like your id.
