I mean, do they just automaticlly get their own bowl game? Whats the point?

If they qualify, they play in their own game to help defray the cost of travelling to the mainland during the regular season. They have to make 5-6 trips EVRY YEAR, which cost a crapload of money, so to be able to get an extra home game and a bowl game at home helps their budget.

yeah because that way the school doesn't have to pay to go to another bowl game in the other 48 states. but the city still makes money for the team that comes in and plays them. and they know if Hamaii went and played in another bowl game not to many fans would beable to go

the people who run the game know they'll get a big crowd if Hawaii is in the game

pretty much - if they didn't go, they would have a hard time attracting locals to go to the game and not that many other school's fans can afford to travel over there.
