Year, make and model - 1990 oldsmobile cutlas supreme;
Engine size - 3.1 L V6;
Manual or automatic transmission - automatic;
Mileage - 260,000 miles;
I have recently noticed a lack of power when accelerating at high speeds or up hills. My car runs great otherwise and still can reach highway speeds,just not as quickly as it used to. Occasionally it will quickly pull back when trying to acelerate too fast and the check engine light pops up for a few minutes and then goes off. I am planning on replacing the fuel filterand spark plugs which have not been replaced now for well over 100,000 miles. Is there any other tips you could give me to help correct this problem or do youthink the plugs and fuel filter will do the trick?Thanks,
Gary

what you need to do is a basic rebuild on the engine. with that many miles im sure your piston rings are wore down to the point that there is so much blow by and the on the heads the valves prolly dont hold the pressure that they used to but you might be able to get away with leaving the heads alone

basic rebuild on the engine consist of

new rod bearings.
new piston rings
new head gasket.
new head bolts/
while you have it apart a new timeing chain or belt would do some good.

depending on how handy you are you can do this on your own in a day or 2

With the mileage you have on that engine I am not surprised you are losing performance. The plugs and fuel filter will not hurt. While the plugs are out do a compression test. You could be losing compression through the rings and/or valves and that would equate to power loss. Another thing to have checked is the timing belt/chain. If it has stretched the timing will be retarded and this will cause a drop in power.

I'd also replace the air filter,plug wires,do an oil change an pretty much be grateful that my 260,000 mile car still runs after not having a tune up in 100,000 miles.

At 260,000 miles your lucky to still be drivin'! The engine and transmission are probably not what they used to be. Keep up with your rgular maintenance, but be prepared you may not be able to keep her much longer. Sorry! Good luck!
